How Can I Have Healthier Teeth?

The best way to have healthier teeth is to adopt a good oral hygiene routine and to see your dentist for regular visits. It only takes a few small changes to increase the health of your teeth. With time, these changes become habits that you will be doing automatically.

Brush

To have healthier teeth, brush at least twice a day, optimally right after a meal to remove any leftover residue that has attached itself to your teeth. It takes two to three minutes to brush thoroughly.

The tools you use to brush with are just as important as the frequency of brushing.

Choose a toothbrush that is comfortable in your hand. There are a variety of grips and styles to choose from, so make sure to have one that is easy to hold. Also, choose a soft brush, as medium or hard bristles can damage your teeth and scratch your gums.

When reaching for the toothpaste, avoid the sugary, fun-colored options and reach for fluoridated toothpaste instead. The fluoride helps harden tooth enamel, which reduces the risk of tooth decay.

Floss

Flossing is often skipped but is an important part of having healthier teeth. It removes plaque and food particles from areas a toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing reduces the risk of gum disease and helps prevent tooth decay.

Pay attention to what you eat

Some foods are more prone to softening teeth, increasing the bacteria in the mouth and staining the enamel. Avoid sugary foods and drink. Limit alcohol, tea and coffee consumption. Stay away from tobacco. Do not chomp on ice or hard candies.

Teeth are not tools

Teeth are tools for eating, not for opening bottle tops or packages. They should not be used to crack nuts or untie knots. Using teeth for activities other than chewing on food can put them at risk of chipping, breaking or even falling out. Instead, reach for the scissors or the bottle opener. Use the right tool for the job.

Protect

Teeth are often lost due to sports activities or accidents. When playing sports, wear a mouthguard or helmet to prevent injury. If a tooth is knocked out, take immediate measures to save it. Make an emergency dental appointment, and try to fit the tooth back into place.

If the tooth will not go back in, store it in milk until you can arrive at the appointment. Do not let more than 30 minutes to an hour go by. Be seen immediately. Fast action is the only way to save the tooth.

See a dentist

In addition to daily care, smart food choices and protecting your teeth from injury, it is important to see a dentist regularly. Schedule cleanings once or twice a year, and report any problems, such as toothaches, as they occur.

Your smile is an important part of your health. Do not neglect looking after it. A few simple steps daily soon become habits. Those habits lead to a better lifestyle, a healthier mouth and a smile you can be proud of.
